> TIPS FOR DAY OF PHOTO SHOOT
The following suggestions are simply some basic
portrait guidelines that will result in a better image. You do not have
to follow all or any of them if they interfere with your own personal
style or preferences. Note that you may wish to make arrangements
for hair and/or make-up appointments.
Clothing: In
any portrait the attention should focus on you, not the clothing
- Should be subdued and simple.

- Avoid bold patterns and prints (polka dots,
plaids, flowers)
- Avoid brilliant colours (i.e. red).
- Low key colours (medium to dark tones)
photograph best.
- Bring an extra change of clothing for
a change of pace, including extra jackets, hats, sunglasses, etc.
Choose a lighter coloured pair of clothing, and a darker pair.
- Make sure all clothing is wrinkle and repair
free.
- Too form fitting or too loose clothing
should generally be avoided.
- In a group portrait, colours and
styles of clothing are, ideally, compatible and do not clash
.- Women
usually
photograph best in full length sleeves.
- If you feel uncomfortable in elaborate
clothing, forego these for informal clothing (children also
photograph best in relaxed clothing).
Cosmetics: Tips
for those who use make-up
- In natural lighting (outdoors, subdued
lighting), natural make up photographs best.
- In harsh studio lighting, a slightly heavier
hand can be used when applying make up. Studio lighting can wash
away the warmth and tonalities of skin tone, thus blush is a good
substitute.
- Black and white photography allows for
greater contrast (the eyes or lips, and cheekbones can be
emphasized/stronger).
- Bring any cosmetics you used to the shoot
for touch ups (just in case). Powder or oil blotting papers, and a
comb or hairbrush are almost always needed.
Ensuring that you are well rested is
probably the best advice of all. Also, you are more than welcome to
bring some music to listen to during the shoot. This should be a fun
experience for you!
